Kolkata : Kolkata girl Bipaasha Paul, aged 14, won the gold medal at the South Asian Karate Championship held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on July 4-5, 2025. She competed in the cadet individual female kata category against top karatekas from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, becoming the South Asian champion.
Bipaasha also secured a silver medal in the junior female team kata event alongside teammates Ujjesha Ghosh and Diya Roy. She trains under Hanshi Premjit Sen at the Premjit Sen Martial Arts Academy in Kolkata and had previously won double gold at the National Karate Championship earlier in 2025.
A student of The Heritage School, Kolkata, Bipaasha is ranked India’s No.1 cadet kata athlete and has her sights set on the upcoming Asian Karate Championship in China this September, viewing the South Asian event as a stepping stone for bigger goals. Her coach Premjit Sen had predicted her success and encouraged her to give a “wow performance,” which she achieved.
India topped the overall medal tally at the 9th South Asian Karate Championship, winning 23 golds among other medals, highlighting the strength of Indian karatekas including Bipaasha.
