Exeter Chiefs have confirmed that a proposed takeover by American backers will be put to a vote by the club’s 700 members at a special general meeting early next month.
The development comes as more investors show interest in Premiership Rugby clubs, with several teams already receiving financial backing from global businesses and wealthy individuals.
Financial Pressure Behind Proposed Deal
Exeter’s most recent accounts revealed more than £10m in post-tax losses, highlighting the financial challenges facing the club. Rowe, who has played a key role in funding the Chiefs for nearly three decades, has previously said new investment is needed to ensure long-term sustainability.
Other clubs in the league have also attracted new investors. Newcastle Falcons were purchased by Red Bull in August, while billionaire inventor James Dyson became co-owner of Bath Rugby earlier this year after injecting significant capital.
Investment bank Raine Group and consulting firm Deloitte have also been hired to promote the league and its clubs to potential investors worldwide.
Premiership Rugby Planning Structural Changes
Premiership Rugby is set to introduce a franchise-style system from next season, which will remove on-field relegation from the top division. League officials believe this structure will give investors greater financial certainty.
There are also plans to expand the competition. The league hopes to add two more teams through a tender process by 2029 and eventually grow to 20 clubs by 2040, potentially split across two conference-style divisions similar to American sports leagues.
Exeter’s Rise In English Rugby
Exeter remain one of the biggest success stories of the traditional promotion and relegation system. The club earned promotion to the Premiership in 2010 after beating Bristol Bears in a two-legged play-off.
Ten years later, the Chiefs achieved a historic double by winning both the English Premiership and the European Rugby Champions Cup.
After finishing ninth in the 2024–25 season, Exeter have improved significantly this year. The team currently sits fourth in the league and has reached the semi-finals of the European Rugby Challenge Cup.
