Lonato, Italy – Indian shooters are making a strong push for the finals at the ongoing ISSF World Cup (Shotgun), with several athletes positioning themselves for contention in both men’s and women’s skeet events. The competition is fierce, with the final qualifying rounds set for tomorrow.
Men’s Skeet: Gill and Khan Lead the Charge
Young gun Bhavtegh Singh Gill delivered an impressive performance, firing two perfect rounds of 25 to significantly boost his chances for the finals. He now sits alongside seasoned Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan, both accumulating identical scores of 98 after four qualifying rounds. Gill has been particularly consistent, achieving flawless scores in three of his four rounds, placing him provisionally 12th. Khan, with rounds of 24, 25, 24, and 25, is currently in 15th position among a large field of 176 shooters.
The men’s skeet competition is incredibly tight. So far, four shooters have achieved perfect scores of 100, and an additional six have missed only one target. Gill and Khan are part of a crowded group of 16 shooters all tied on 98, making the final six spots highly competitive.
Unfortunately, Paris Olympian Anant Jeet Singh Naruka (24, 24, 24, 23) seems to be falling out of contention with a current score of 95.
Women’s Skeet: Ganemat Sekhon in the Mix
In the women’s skeet event, Ganemat Sekhon remains firmly in contention for a finals berth. After consistent rounds of 24 each on Tuesday, her total tally stands at 96, placing her provisionally eighth. Sekhon, who started Monday in 10th place, has steadily climbed the leaderboard, missing only one target in each of Tuesday’s rounds.
However, the competition is fierce for Sekhon as well, as she is currently tied on 96 with five other shooters, including Sweden’s Victoria Larsson, who presently holds the crucial sixth and final qualifying position.
Fellow Olympians Maheshwari Chauhan and Raiza Dhillon faced a tougher day. Chauhan recorded rounds of 22 and 25, matching Ganemat’s total of 96. Dhillon, with rounds of 24 and 24, finished the day on 93. They are currently in 27th and 28th positions, respectively.
USA’s Dania Jo Vizzi is currently leading the women’s skeet field with an impressive score of 98.
The decisive final qualifying rounds for both men’s and women’s skeet are scheduled for Tuesday, followed by the highly anticipated finals.
