Rugby Premier League 2026 Returns June 16 For Season 2

The Rugby Premier League is set to return with its second edition from June 16, marking a significant step forward in India’s rapidly evolving rugby ecosystem. Organized by Rugby India in partnership with GMR Sports, the league continues its mission to popularize rugby through a fast-paced, franchise-based format.

After a successful inaugural season, the Rugby Premier League (RPL) is expected to build on its growing popularity, combining international stars with emerging Indian talent in a high-intensity Rugby Sevens format. The tournament’s return signals strong confidence in the league’s long-term vision and commercial viability.

Building on a successful inaugural season

The first edition of the Rugby Premier League, held in 2025, featured six city-based franchises and brought together top global and Indian players. Teams such as Chennai Bulls, Delhi Redz, and Kalinga Black Tigers helped create a vibrant and competitive environment, attracting attention from fans and stakeholders alike.

The league featured a condensed, broadcast-friendly format with multiple matches played daily, ensuring high engagement levels. With over 30 international players participating, the RPL successfully blended global expertise with local ambition.

Rugby Sevens format driving fan engagement

One of the key highlights of the Rugby Premier League is its adoption of the Rugby Sevens format, known for its speed, intensity, and spectator appeal. Matches are shorter and more dynamic, making them ideal for modern audiences and television broadcasting.

The format also aligns with Olympic rugby standards, providing Indian players with valuable exposure and experience at an international level. The league’s structure ensures a competitive yet entertaining product that appeals to both seasoned rugby fans and new viewers.

A strategic push to grow rugby in India

The Rugby Premier League is part of a broader effort to expand rugby’s footprint in India, where the sport is played across hundreds of districts but lacks mainstream visibility. By introducing a franchise-based model similar to other successful leagues, organizers aim to bridge this gap and create a sustainable sporting ecosystem.

The league also serves as a platform for talent identification and development, with Indian players gaining the opportunity to train and compete alongside world-class athletes.

What to expect from Season 2

With the second edition kicking off on June 16, expectations are high for improved competition, larger audiences, and enhanced production quality. The tournament is likely to retain its six-team format while introducing refinements based on feedback from the inaugural season.

As India continues to diversify its sporting landscape beyond cricket, the Rugby Premier League stands out as a bold and ambitious project—one that could redefine the future of rugby in the country.
