Chelsea forward Jesse Derry described his Premier League debut as a “dream come true” despite being taken to hospital following a serious head injury.
The 18-year-old made his first start for Chelsea against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge but was forced off in the 45th minute after a heavy clash of heads with Zach Abbott. The youngster received oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off after a lengthy stoppage.
Chelsea later confirmed that Derry was conscious, talking and undergoing precautionary checks in hospital, easing initial concerns over the severity of the injury.
Debut Cut Short By Injury
Taking to social media after the incident, Derry expressed gratitude and positivity despite the setback. He thanked the club’s medical staff, hospital team, teammates and fans for their support, while also sharing his eagerness to return to action soon.
The forward, son of former Premier League midfielder Shaun Derry, had previously made two substitute appearances in the FA Cup before earning his first start in the league.
He was replaced by Liam Delap as a concussion substitute, a rule that allows teams to make an additional change without affecting their standard substitutions.
Multiple Injury Concerns In Match
The game also saw another concerning collision involving Morgan Gibbs-White and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez later in the match. However, Forest confirmed that Gibbs-White’s substitution was not due to concussion.
While Derry’s debut ended in unfortunate circumstances, his positive response and recovery update offer encouragement as he looks to make a swift return to the pitch.
