Minnesota Timberwolves drew first blood in their Western Conference semi-final series with a narrow 104-102 win over the San Antonio Spurs, despite a historic defensive display from Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs’ star delivered a record-breaking performance, registering 12 blocks — the most ever in an NBA playoff game — along with 11 points and 15 rebounds. The feat saw him become just the third player in NBA history to record a playoff triple-double that includes blocks since the stat began being tracked in the 1973-74 season.
However, his efforts were not enough to stop Minnesota, who took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with a composed performance on the road.
Edwards Boost After Injury Return
Anthony Edwards made a timely return from injury and played a key role off the bench, scoring 18 points to help the Timberwolves hold off a late Spurs push.
Minnesota, the sixth seed in the Western Conference, showed resilience in closing out a tight contest against the higher-seeded Spurs, who will now look to respond quickly in game two.
Wembanyama admitted the team needs to improve, saying they must “figure it out in the next 48 hours,” while expressing confidence in a turnaround.
Knicks Dominate In Eastern Conference Clash
Elsewhere, the New York Knicks made a powerful start to their series by thrashing the Philadelphia 76ers 137-98.
Jalen Brunson led the charge with 35 points, including 27 in the first half, while OG Anunoby added 18.
The Knicks became the first team in NBA history to record three consecutive playoff wins by margins of at least 25 points, underlining their dominant form.
Despite the heavy defeat, 76ers coach Nick Nurse remained pragmatic, noting that the series score remains just 1-0 regardless of the margin.
Game two in both series is scheduled for Wednesday, with the Spurs aiming to bounce back on home court while the Knicks look to extend their dominance.
