England captain Leah Williamson has returned to the Lionesses squad as they begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The 28-year-old defender has not featured since lifting England’s second successive European title at Euro 2025, having undergone knee surgery shortly afterwards. She now comes back into contention ahead of crucial qualifiers next month.
Key Figures Return
Leah Williamson missed friendlies against China, Ghana and Australia, as well as defeat by Brazil, but made her club comeback in December.
Manager Sarina Wiegman has also welcomed back several senior players, including Chelsea forward Lauren James, Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
James returns after a four-month ankle injury lay-off, boosting England’s attacking options with Beth Mead sidelined by a fractured shin. Greenwood and Hampton also resume international duties after injury setbacks earlier in the season.
New Faces And Notable Absentees
There is a first senior call-up for Poppy Pattinson, while 20-year-old Freya Godfrey retains her place despite yet to earn a cap. Goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck is recalled, but Khiara Keating drops out.
England remain without Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone, who is recovering from a hip injury, and Bay FC defender Anouk Denton is not included.
Road To 2027 Begins
The Lionesses travel to Turkey to face Ukraine on 3 March before hosting Iceland at the City Ground on 7 March. It marks their first competitive fixtures since triumphing at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.
England will also face reigning world champions Spain later in the group as they aim to secure a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“It’s a new year with new objectives,” Wiegman said. “These are very important fixtures and new opposition for this team. I’m looking forward to being back with the squad and getting back to work.”
