Australia Announces Spin-Heavy Squad for 2026 T20 World Cup

Australia have announced a 15-member squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, opting for a spin-heavy combination as they prepare for conditions in Sri Lanka and India.

The selectors have clearly kept the conditions in mind, with slow bowlers expected to play a major role on spin-friendly pitches across the subcontinent, shaping the overall balance of the squad.

The most notable omission is big-hitting all-rounder Mitchell Owen, who has been a regular in the side in recent months. The Hobart Hurricanes star has missed out following the return of Cameron Green from injury and the continued presence of the more experienced Marcus Stoinis, both of whom provide seam-bowling depth alongside proven batting pedigree.

However, the biggest surprise in the 15-player squad is the inclusion of Matthew Kuhnemann. The left-arm spinner has played just four T20 internationals since making his debut on Australia’s 2025 winter tour of the West Indies and is yet to take a wicket, with best figures of 0 for 14.

Despite the modest T20I returns, Kuhnemann’s left-arm angle is seen as a valuable asset on turning tracks, particularly after his impressive performances during Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in early 2025, where he emerged as one of the standout bowlers with the red ball.

Veteran Adam Zampa is the other frontline spinner included in the squad, underlining the selectors’ faith in Kuhnemann to complement Australia’s white-ball spin attack.

Australia have also opted against selecting a left-arm pacer, with Mitchell Starc having retired from T20 internationals and Spencer Johnson sidelined by a back injury. Brisbane Heat fast bowler Xavier Bartlett was preferred over Sydney Sixers’ Ben Dwarshuis for the final pace spot.

Mitchell Marsh has been named captain and will lead Australia at the marquee ICC event as they look to reclaim the T20 World Cup title, which they last won in 2021.

According to cricket.com.au, selection chair George Bailey said the decision to back a spin-heavy squad was influenced by Australia’s recent success and the conditions expected in Sri Lanka and India.

“The T20 side has enjoyed a long run of success, allowing us to select a balanced squad for the conditions in Sri Lanka and India. We are confident that Pat, Josh and Tim will be available for the World Cup. This is a preliminary squad, and changes will be made if necessary,” Bailey was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Australia’s campaign will begin in Group B, with all group-stage matches scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka. The team will then travel to India for the Super Eights, should they progress.

Ahead of the tournament, Australia will face Pakistan in a three-match T20I series, which will serve as key preparation for the World Cup. The squad for that series is expected to be announced at a later date.
