The first round of group-stage fixtures at the FIFA World Cup 2026 has produced goals, drama and several eye-catching individual performances. A total of 75 goals were scored across 24 matches, giving the tournament an average of 3.13 goals per game — the highest after the opening round since 1958. Nine matches ended in draws, highlighting the competitiveness of the expanded competition.
Messi and Kane Lead The Scoring Charts
Lionel Messi and Harry Kane were the only players among the tournament’s most frequent shooters to convert their chances into goals.
Messi scored a hat-trick against Algeria to move level with Miroslav Klose as the highest scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals. Kane netted twice for England, drawing level with Gary Lineker as England’s leading World Cup scorer with 10 goals.
Meanwhile, Arda Guler attempted a tournament-high eight shots against Australia. However, those efforts produced just 0.26 expected goals (xG), indicating that most of his attempts came from difficult positions.
Creative Midfielders Make Their Mark
Pedri emerged as the tournament’s most creative player after the opening round. The Spanish midfielder registered 1.23 expected assists (xA) against Cape Verde and won possession six times in the final third — twice as many as any other player.
Germany’s Joshua Kimmich led the assist charts with two assists in his side’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao.
Amad Diallo Tops The Dribbling Rankings
Amad Diallo has been the standout dribbler of the tournament so far. Despite playing only 34 minutes as a substitute against Ecuador, the Ivory Coast winger completed the most successful dribbles and recorded the highest success rate among players attempting five or more dribbles.
In contrast, Vinicius Junior struggled in Brazil’s draw with Morocco. The winger attempted nine dribbles but failed to complete a single one, the highest number of unsuccessful dribble attempts by any player in the opening round.
Dominating The Physical Battles
Panama defender Jiovany Ramos and Senegal winger Krepin Diatta were the most successful players in ground duels, winning a higher percentage of their contests than any other player who competed in at least 10 duels.
Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Jovo Lukic was unbeatable in the air. He won all nine of his aerial duels against Canada, making him the most dominant aerial performer of the opening round.
