Indian badminton ace P. V. Sindhu bowed out of the Singapore Open Super 750 tournament after suffering a quarterfinal defeat against reigning world No. 1 An Se-young on Friday.
The two-time Olympic medallist fought hard but eventually lost in straight games, 17-21, 14-21, in a contest that lasted 48 minutes. Despite the defeat, Sindhu displayed glimpses of her trademark attacking game against the top-seeded South Korean star.
Sindhu had entered the quarterfinals with strong momentum after a dominant straight-game victory over Japan’s Riko Gunji in the previous round. However, the Indian shuttler once again found An Se-young proving too strong on the international stage.
The match highlighted the gap currently separating the world’s top-ranked women’s singles players from the chasing pack, with An Se-young maintaining her remarkable consistency throughout the season. The South Korean has enjoyed a stellar run in recent years, winning multiple BWF World Tour titles and continuing her dominance in women’s badminton.
For Sindhu, the Singapore Open campaign still offered encouraging signs. The former world champion showed improved movement and aggression during the tournament, raising hopes ahead of upcoming major international events later this year.
India’s challenge in the tournament, however, continues in other categories with several Indian doubles combinations and singles players delivering promising performances during the Super 750 event in Singapore.
