Lakshya Sen has been handed one of the toughest possible opening-round assignments at the Li-Ning China Masters 2026, with the Indian shuttler set to face reigning world champion Alex Lanier of France.
The BWF World Tour Super 750 event will be held from September 1 to 6 at the Shenzhen Sports Centre Gymnasium, with a total prize purse of US$1.25 million and 11,000 ranking points on offer to the men’s singles champion.
For Sen, currently ranked World No. 13, the draw comes at an important stage of the season. His opponent, Lanier, has climbed to World No. 7 and arrives in China as the newly crowned men’s singles world champion after his breakthrough triumph at the 2026 BWF World Championships in New Delhi.
A High-Voltage Opening Round
The Sen-Lanier contest is particularly intriguing because both players have the ability to turn defence into attack and thrive in long rallies.
Lanier, however, will enter the match with the psychological advantage of having beaten Sen in their most recent meeting. At the 2025 Denmark Open, the Frenchman defeated the Indian 21-9, 21-14 in the quarterfinals.

The challenge could hardly be bigger.
At just 21, Lanier has already created history by becoming France’s first men’s singles world champion. His run in New Delhi underlined his rapid rise from promising European talent to one of the most dangerous players on the BWF circuit.
His form was also evident at the World Championships, where he defeated Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul 21-12, 21-13 on his way to the title.
For Sen, therefore, this is not merely another first-round match. It is an immediate test against a player currently operating at the highest level of men’s singles badminton.
