New Delhi: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has come under sharp scrutiny after its women’s committee chief, Valanka Alemao, demanded answers over a “series of blunders” that overshadowed India’s campaign at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
In a strongly worded communication to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, Alemao called for accountability, stating that the lapses had brought “huge embarrassment” to the country and raised serious questions about the federation’s functioning.
Questions Over Administrative Decisions
Alemao flagged multiple procedural lapses, particularly in decision-making by the technical committee. One of the major concerns was the late appointment of head coach Amelia Valverde, who was brought in just weeks before the tournament.
She questioned the transparency of the process, pointing out that no proper selection procedure or shortlist of candidates was followed. The timing of the coaching change, so close to a major tournament, also raised doubts about planning and preparedness.
Kit Controversy Adds to Embarrassment
Among the most glaring issues was the controversy surrounding ill-fitting kits, which forced players to raise concerns publicly ahead of the tournament.
The episode not only disrupted preparations but also highlighted deeper logistical shortcomings within the system. The players’ struggles with basic equipment became a symbol of the broader administrative failures that plagued the campaign.
Poor Campaign on the Field
India’s on-field performance reflected the off-field chaos. Despite showing promise in phases—particularly in a narrow defeat to Vietnam—the team failed to build momentum.
Losses to stronger sides like Japan and Chinese Taipei resulted in India finishing bottom of their group without a win, marking a disappointing end to their campaign.
Demand for Accountability
Alemao has urged the AIFF leadership to convene an Executive Committee meeting to investigate the issues thoroughly and take action against those responsible.
She also alleged that key bodies, including the Women’s Football Committee, were kept out of crucial decisions, further deepening concerns about governance and transparency within the federation.
A Wake-Up Call for Indian Football
The controversy has once again exposed systemic issues in Indian women’s football, even as the sport continues to grow in visibility and ambition.
With major international tournaments ahead, the spotlight is now firmly on the AIFF to address these concerns, restore confidence, and ensure that such lapses do not derail the progress of the national team in the future.
