England have named Meg Jones as captain for 2026 after Zoe Stratford stepped away due to pregnancy.
Stratford, who led the Red Roses to the 2025 Rugby World Cup title, is expecting her first child in September. Her absence has opened the door for Jones, one of England’s most consistent performers in recent years.
Jones, 29, was already part of the leadership group as vice-captain. She now takes full charge of the side for the upcoming season.
“It’s a huge honour,” Jones said. “There’s strong support in the group, and that makes the job easier.”
She will be supported by experienced players like Amy Cokayne and Alex Matthews, who step in as vice-captains.
A leader shaped by resilience
Jones’ journey has not been easy. She broke into the England team at just 18 and later represented Team GB in Sevens at the Olympics.
During the Covid period, she even worked as a delivery driver after her Sevens contract ended. In 2024, she suffered a personal loss when both her parents passed away within months.
Despite that, she remained a key figure in England’s dominant run.
Head coach John Mitchell praised her leadership qualities.
“She brings energy and leads by example,” Mitchell said.
Eyes on another title
England begin their Women’s Six Nations title defence on 11 April. They come into the tournament with seven straight titles and a 33-match winning streak.
With Jones now at the helm, the Red Roses will aim to continue that dominance.
