IPL 2026 Start Date Announced: BCCI Confirms Tournament From March 28

BCCI Announces IPL 2026 Start Date
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed that the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin on March 28, 2026. The upcoming season will mark the 19th edition of the tournament and is expected to run until May 31, 2026, bringing nearly two months of high-intensity T20 cricket.
The announcement has already generated excitement among cricket fans as franchises prepare for another competitive season of the world’s most popular T20 league.
Opening Match Likely In Bengaluru
Reports suggest that the opening match of IPL 2026 could take place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. As per IPL tradition, the defending champions are likely to play the first game of the season.
Bengaluru is also expected to host some of the most important matches of the tournament, including the final and possibly other playoff fixtures.
League Stage And Playoff Schedule
The IPL 2026 league stage is expected to run from March 28 to May 24, followed by the playoff stage beginning around May 26. The grand final is scheduled to take place on May 31, which will bring the tournament to an exciting conclusion.
The competition will once again follow the familiar IPL structure with league matches leading into the knockout playoffs.
Tournament To Feature 10 Teams And 84 Matches
The upcoming season will feature 10 franchises competing in a total of 84 matches, making it one of the largest editions of the tournament so far.
The format is expected to include a round-robin league stage followed by playoffs, ensuring every team gets multiple opportunities to qualify for the knockout rounds.
Schedule To Be Released In Phases
The complete IPL 2026 schedule is expected to be released in two phases. Initially, the board will announce the first set of matches, while the rest of the fixtures may be revealed later depending on logistical considerations.
This approach allows the organizers to manage venue availability, travel planning, and other operational factors.
Teams Begin Preparations For New Season
With the start date approaching, IPL franchises have already begun training camps and preparations. Teams are working on strategies, building team combinations, and preparing their players for the demanding two-month tournament.
The IPL 2026 season is expected to once again bring together top international and Indian cricketers, promising thrilling matches and packed stadiums across the country.
