Ahmedabad: When the India national cricket team lifted the trophy at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, one name towered above the rest—Sanju Samson.
What made Samson’s campaign truly remarkable was that he was not even part of India’s starting XI at the beginning of the tournament.
Opportunity After Early Struggles
India had initially begun the tournament with Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan opening the innings. However, the pair failed to click in the first few matches and India’s batting looked unsettled.
The situation worsened after a heavy defeat to South Africa national cricket team in the Super 8 stage, prompting the team management to rethink its combination.
The turning point came when Samson was drafted into the playing XI as an opener alongside Abhishek Sharma, while Ishan Kishan was shifted to the No.3 position.
The tactical move proved to be a masterstroke.
The Knock That Changed Everything
Samson immediately repaid the faith shown in him. In a must-win clash against the West Indies cricket team, the stylish right-hander smashed a brilliant 97 not out, guiding India to a crucial victory that sealed their place in the semifinals.
It was an innings that reignited India’s campaign and established Samson as the team’s new attacking force at the top.
Dominating the Knockouts
Samson carried that momentum into the knockout rounds.
In the semifinal against England national cricket team, he delivered a breathtaking 89 off 42 balls, dismantling the bowling attack and propelling India into the final.
The final against New Zealand national cricket team saw him repeat the feat. Samson struck another commanding 89 off 46 balls, setting the platform for India’s emphatic 96-run victory and sealing the country’s third T20 World Cup crown.
Tournament’s Standout Performer
Samson finished the tournament with 321 runs in five innings, averaging 80.25 and striking at a blistering 199.37, numbers that earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
Guidance and Belief
Behind his resurgence was valuable advice from Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who helped Samson refine his mindset and preparation during a difficult phase before the tournament.
Reflecting on his journey after the final, Samson said: “There has been a lot of guidance from senior players, but the conversations I had with Sachin sir gave me huge clarity about my mindset and preparation. When I wasn’t playing earlier, I kept dreaming about performing for India on a stage like this. To contribute in the semifinal and final and help India win the World Cup is something I will cherish forever.”
A Story of Patience and Redemption
Ironically, Samson was part of India’s squad during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 but did not play a single match.
Two years later, he went from waiting on the sidelines to becoming the biggest match-winner of the tournament.
From an unexpected selection call to the hero of the biggest matches, Sanju Samson’s campaign in the 2026 T20 World Cup will be remembered as a story of perseverance, belief and perfect timing on cricket’s grandest T20 stage.
