Spanish figure skater Tomas-Llorenc Guarino Sabate has been granted permission to perform his popular Minions-themed routine at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan after resolving copyright issues.
Copyright Dispute Resolved
Sabate had faced uncertainty over using music from the Minions and Despicable Me films, including Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy”. Due to licensing concerns, he was initially told he might have to change his routine.
After days of negotiations with rights holders, including Universal Pictures and Pharrell Williams’ representatives, the licences were finally approved.
Support From Fans Worldwide
The issue sparked strong support online, with fans using the hashtag LetTheMinionsSkate. Sabate thanked supporters on Instagram, saying their encouragement kept him motivated during the process.
Fan-Favourite Routine
Throughout the season, Sabate has skated in a yellow T-shirt and blue overalls inspired by the Minions characters. His short programme has become a crowd favourite at international events, including the European Championships in Sheffield.
