Maguire red and late penalty controversy deny Manchester United win in 2-2 draw with Bournemouth

Bournemouth: Manchester United were left frustrated after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in the Premier League on Friday, as a late penalty and a red card for Harry Maguire sparked controversy and cost the visitors two valuable points.

After a cagey opening half, United captain Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock from the penalty spot just after the hour mark, giving the visitors control. Bournemouth responded quickly, however, with Ryan Christie drilling home a low finish six minutes later to restore parity.

United regained the lead when Fernandes delivered an in-swinging corner that was turned into his own net by James Hill under pressure at the far post.

The Red Devils looked set to secure victory, but the contest took another dramatic turn in the closing stages.

With 12 minutes remaining, Maguire — earlier named in England’s squad for upcoming friendlies — brought down Evanilson inside the area. The referee awarded a penalty and showed the defender a red card, a decision that sparked furious protests from United players and staff.

Teenage forward Junior Kroupi calmly converted from the spot to make it 2-2 and rescue a point for the hosts. Bournemouth pushed hard for a winner during a frantic finale but United held on despite being reduced to 10 men.

The penalty decision became the main talking point after the match, with United manager Michael Carrick visibly angry over what he described as inconsistent officiating. Captain Fernandes also expressed disappointment at his side’s inability to close out the game after leading twice.

The draw left Manchester United still third in the standings, while Bournemouth extended their unbeaten run but settled for a fifth consecutive draw.
