New Delhi | January 13: The Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2026, scheduled from January 13 to 18, got underway on Tuesday at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, ushering in six days of elite badminton as the BWF World Tour Super 750 event opens the international season on Indian soil.
Indian interest is spread across all disciplines from the opening day, with a strong mix of established stars and emerging talent in action. Former world champion PV Sindhu will begin her campaign on Wednesday, facing Vietnam’s T.L. Nguyen in the women’s singles round of 64 as she returns to competitive action at home.
The men’s singles draw features a blockbuster all-Indian first-round clash on Tuesday, with Lakshya Sen taking on rising star Ayush Shetty. Alongside them, India’s challenge in men’s singles also includes HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and youngster Tharun Mannepalli, all aiming to capitalise on familiar conditions.
India’s doubles campaign gets underway across categories. In men’s doubles, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun begin their run on Tuesday, while former champions Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy remain a major draw for home fans later in the tournament.
The mixed doubles draw sees Indian representation through Dhruv Rawat and Maneesha K, who are in action on the opening day.
In women’s doubles, the experienced pairing of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand spearhead India’s challenge, while in women’s singles, India is also represented by Malvika Bansod and promising teenager Tanvi Sharma.
With women’s world No.1 An Se Young leading a strong international field and the upgraded venue — also set to host the BWF World Championships later this year — the India Open begins with high expectations, packed stands, and valuable ranking points at stake as Indian stars look to make a strong early-season impact in New Delhi.
