The prestigious BWF World Tour Super 300 event will be held at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, with a prize pool of $250,000, attracting several top players from across the world.
However, India will miss one of its biggest stars as Sindhu decided to skip the tournament after returning home from a chaotic three-day period in Dubai. The former world champion had been travelling to Birmingham for the All England Championships when flight operations across the Gulf were disrupted due to escalating tensions in West Asia, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at Dubai airport.
Sindhu later revealed the frightening moments she experienced during the ordeal.
“There was a lot of stress… it was scary. I hope it’s the first and last experience like this,” she said while recalling the tense situation.
The Indian shuttler and her team eventually returned to India with assistance from authorities and the Indian Consulate. After the exhausting experience, she opted to take time to recover physically and mentally rather than compete in Switzerland.
Prannoy, Srikanth Head India’s Hopes
With Sindhu absent, India’s challenge in the tournament will largely depend on seasoned men’s singles players H. S. Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth, both of whom will be aiming for a deep run in the draw.
Young talents such as Kiran George, Ayush Shetty and Tharun Mannepalli are also expected to feature, hoping to make an impact against some of the world’s best shuttlers.
In the doubles category, India will rely on its strong combinations to fight for podium finishes as the competition intensifies in Basel.
Eyes on a Comeback
For Sindhu, the focus now shifts to recovery and preparing for upcoming international events. The Indian star, one of the country’s most decorated badminton players, is expected to return to action in the coming weeks, possibly at the Badminton Asia Championships.
As the Swiss Open begins, India’s experienced campaigners will now carry the nation’s hopes, while fans wait eagerly for Sindhu’s return to the international circuit.
