New Delhi : India’s top badminton stars began their India Open 2026 campaign
on a positive note as Lakshya Sen and the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the second round of the prestigious BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament.
In an all-Indian men’s singles clash, Lakshya Sen showed control and composure to defeat young challenger Ayush Shetty in straight games, 21-12, 21-15, sealing his place in the Round of 16. According to The Bridge, Sen dictated the tempo from the outset, using his experience to neutralise Shetty’s attacking intent. “It was important for me to stay patient and focus on my game,” Sen was quoted as saying by The Bridge.
The spotlight was also on India’s top women’s doubles pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who delivered a commanding straight-game win in their opening match. As reported by The Bridge, the duo looked sharp and well-coordinated, underlining their growing consistency on the world tour.
With several Indian players progressing on the opening day, the hosts enjoyed an encouraging start at the tournament being held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. The India Open now promises more high-intensity action as the competition moves into the second round.
