The San Francisco 49ers delivered one of the biggest shocks of the NFL postseason, knocking out defending Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles with a dramatic 23-19 victory in the NFC Wild Card round at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
Quarterback Brock Purdy rose to the moment late in the fourth quarter, firing a decisive 6-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey to cap a fearless comeback by an injury-hit San Francisco side. The win sends the 49ers into an NFC Divisional Playoff clash against top-seeded Seattle Seahawks, renewing a fierce NFC West rivalry after the teams split their regular-season meetings.
Despite adversity, San Francisco refused to back down. Purdy threw for 262 yards, overcoming two interceptions by Eagles All-Pro cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, as Philadelphia managed to convert those turnovers into just three points.
The turning point came early in the fourth quarter with a moment of brilliance straight out of the playbook of playoff folklore. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings took a pitch and rolled right before launching a perfectly timed 29-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey — a trick play that stunned the Eagles and handed the 49ers a 17-16 lead.
Philadelphia briefly regained the advantage through Jake Elliott’s 33-yard field goal, but Purdy responded calmly, engineering the game-winning drive that ended with his touchdown strike to McCaffrey.
The victory came at a cost for San Francisco. Star tight end George Kittle was ruled out after suffering a torn right Achilles tendon late in the first half, leaving the 49ers shorthanded for the rest of the postseason.
The Eagles, meanwhile, saw their hopes of a repeat championship fade amid an uncharacteristically flat offensive performance. Jalen Hurts threw for just 168 yards and one touchdown, and Philadelphia managed only 36 total yards in the third quarter. Their final chance ended when Hurts’ fourth-and-11 pass fell incomplete with 43 seconds remaining.
For San Francisco, the win marked redemption on the same field where their playoff run ended in heartbreak three seasons ago. For Philadelphia, it was a sobering end to a title defense undone by missed opportunities and offensive struggles.
The 49ers now march on, battered but unbroken, with momentum — and belief — firmly on their side.
