Mumbai: A gripping semifinal at the iconic Wankhede Stadium produced a run-fest and moments of breathtaking fielding as the India national cricket team edged past the England national cricket team by seven runs to enter the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Batting first, India piled up a formidable 253/7, powered by a superb 89 from Sanju Samson, while Shivam Dube (43) and Ishan Kishan (39) added crucial runs to set England a daunting target of 254.
England responded strongly, led by a magnificent century from Jacob Bethell, which kept the chase alive deep into the innings. With England closing in on the target, the match appeared to be slipping away from India.

However, the turning point came through extraordinary fielding from Axar Patel, whose brilliance in the deep proved decisive at key moments.
Axar first produced a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Harry Brook, sprinting across from inside the circle and stretching fully to grab the miscued shot over covers. Later, he was once again involved in a dramatic moment when England’s dangerous partnership between Bethell and Will Jacks threatened to take the game away.
Although the scorecard records the wicket as Jacks c Shivam Dube b Arshdeep Singh, it was Axar who created the opportunity. Racing towards the boundary, he brilliantly intercepted the ball and relayed it back into play for Dube to complete the catch, breaking a crucial 77-run partnership.
Reflecting on the moments after the match, Axar said, “Both catches were different. The catch of Harry Brook was tougher from a fielding point of view. But considering the situation and the way the batters were batting, the catch involving Will Jacks was very important because it broke the partnership at that time.”
The breakthrough halted England’s momentum, and despite Bethell’s heroics, England eventually finished at 246/7, falling just seven runs short of the target.
In a contest that produced nearly 500 runs, India’s sharp fielding ultimately proved the difference. While Axar’s name appears only briefly on the scorecard, his twin fielding efforts ensured India won the battle of fine margins.
India will now face the New Zealand national cricket team in the final at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where the Men in Blue will aim to defend their T20 World Cup crown.
