BBC Sport columnist Phoebe Schecter has shared her predictions for Wildcard Weekend as the NFL play-offs get under way, highlighting why the Houston Texans could go far and backing Drake Maye for MVP honours.
Rams to overpower Panthers
Schecter expects the Los Angeles Rams to beat the Carolina Panthers, despite their close contest earlier in the season. She believes the Rams’ defence will be too strong and praised Matthew Stafford’s MVP-calibre form and Puka Nacua’s dominance in receptions. With Davante Adams set to return, she predicts a comfortable Rams victory.
Bears to edge Packers in rivalry clash
In the historic rivalry between Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, Schecter is backing the Bears. She praised rookie quarterback Caleb Williams for his composure and athleticism, noting Chicago’s league-leading six fourth-quarter comebacks and strong defensive record with 33 takeaways this season.
Bills to survive Jaguars test
Although the Jacksonville Jaguars arrive with eight straight wins, Schecter is tipping the Buffalo Bills to progress. She highlighted Trevor Lawrence’s improved red-zone finishing but ultimately put her faith in Josh Allen’s ability to deliver in big moments.
Eagles to outlast injury-hit 49ers
Schecter believes the Philadelphia Eagles will beat the San Francisco 49ers, crediting Jalen Hurts and the Eagles’ disciplined game plan. She feels Kyle Shanahan has done well despite injuries but doubts whether the 49ers can sustain their form.
Patriots backed as Maye earns MVP shout
The New England Patriots are tipped to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers, with Schecter praising quarterback Drake Maye’s performances. She believes Maye has earned MVP consideration, highlighting his leadership and consistency in just his second season.
Texans’ defence key to deep run
Schecter says Houston Texans’ aggressive defence could trouble any opponent. She pointed to Danielle Hunter’s 15 sacks and Will Anderson’s 85 quarterback pressures as major factors. With four players recording four interceptions each, she believes Houston have the tools to make a deep play-off push.
