Ahead of India’s opening T20I against South Africa at Barabati Stadium, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav delivered a confident and reassuring message during his pre-match press conference. With the T20 World Cup 2026 on the horizon, Yadav provided clarity on the fitness of key players Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill, both of whom have been recovering from injuries.
Yadav was quick to address the recent concerns surrounding the availability of the two star players. “Right now, both of them look healthy and fit. They are in the team,” Yadav confirmed, putting to rest any doubts about their participation in the series. Both Pandya and Gill have been integral to India’s plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup and their return to full fitness is seen as a massive boost.
The captain reserved special praise for Pandya, highlighting the all-rounder’s importance to the team. “His inclusion brings invaluable balance and greater flexibility to our squad, both with the bat and the ball. He adds a lot of depth to our lineup,” said Yadav, emphasizing how vital Pandya’s all-round contributions are to the team’s success.
With the T20 World Cup looming large, Yadav also spoke about the team’s approach in the lead-up to the mega event. The captain stressed the need for continuity and stability in team selection, rather than constant experimentation.
“We’re focusing on the process, not just changing combinations for the sake of it. Things are going really well, and we want to stick to our plan,” Yadav said, reiterating that while minor tweaks are inevitable, the core structure of the team will remain largely unchanged.
Yadav confirmed that the opening pair for the T20I series will consist of Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, who will provide the team with an aggressive start to set the tone for the innings. “Gill and Abhishek are the players we believe can give us the aggressive start we need in the T20 format. We’re excited about the combination,” he said.
With a settled squad and a clear game plan, Yadav is aiming to start the five-match series with a dominant performance, setting a positive tone for India’s preparations for the T20 World Cup.
As the Indian team gears up for the first T20I at Barabati Stadium, all eyes will be on the return of Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill, whose fitness could play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s prospects heading into the World Cup next year.
