Why Barcelona Reportedly Asked Lewandowski to Stop Scoring — Inside a Stunning End-of-Season Twist

A new biography reveals an extraordinary behind-the-scenes moment from Barcelona’s 2022-23 La Liga triumph — and what it means for Robert Lewandowski’s future

Why Barcelona Reportedly Asked Lewandowski to Stop Scoring — Inside a Stunning End-of-Season Twist

A Strange Request at the Peak of Triumph

Barcelona’s 2022–23 La Liga title win was memorable on many fronts, but a newly published biography has now added a bizarre chapter to that story. According to “Lewandowski. Prawdziwy” (Lewandowski: The Real One) by Sebastian Staszewski, the club asked Robert Lewandowski to stop scoring goals in the final stretch of his debut season — a request no elite striker ever expects.

With two league matches remaining and Barcelona already crowned champions under Xavi Hernandez, Lewandowski was leading the Pichichi race with 23 goals. That’s when the club, the book claims, summoned him into a meeting that took an unexpected turn.

“Robert, we need you to stop scoring goals in the last two matches,” a Barcelona executive allegedly told him — leaving the striker stunned.

The Financial Clause Behind the Controversial Call

The motive wasn’t tactical. It wasn’t about resting the team. It wasn’t about squad rotation.
It was about money.

Lewandowski’s transfer agreement with Bayern Munich reportedly included a performance bonus — €2.5 million payable if he reached 25 league goals. With Barcelona still battling severe financial constraints, the club allegedly attempted to avoid triggering the add-on.

Ultimately, Lewandowski played both remaining games but didn’t add to his tally. He still secured the Pichichi Trophy, finishing above Karim Benzema, but the ethical dilemma lingered: should financial pressure ever dictate sporting performance?

A New Future? AC Milan Circle the Barcelona Star

As Lewandowski turns 37 next summer, transfer speculation has intensified. Italian outlet Calciomercato reports that AC Milan are preparing a serious move for the Polish striker, identifying him as a priority target for June 2026.

Milan officials have already met with his agent Pini Zahavi, but salary negotiations pose a huge challenge. Lewandowski earns nearly €20 million net per season — triple AC Milan’s top salary bracket. The Italian club hope that at this stage of his career, the striker may prioritise competitive ambition and stability over financial parity.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are laying the groundwork for the next generation of attackers, reportedly evaluating Dusan Vlahovic, Julian Alvarez, and rising Levante star Karl Etta Eyong as long-term options.

Still Barcelona’s Most Reliable Finisher

Despite uncertainty about his role, Lewandowski continues to prove his worth on the pitch. His hat-trick against Celta Vigo last week took him to 106 goals in 159 appearances, pushing him past Neymar on Barcelona’s all-time scoring charts.

This season, even without being guaranteed a starting place every match, he remains the club’s leading La Liga scorer with seven goals — ahead of young talents like Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez. His debut season figures remain extraordinary: 42 goals in 52 matches across competitions.

Age, it seems, has barely touched his instincts.

Lewandowski’s Heart Still in Barcelona

Despite the noise around his future, Lewandowski has made his preference clear: he wants to stay.
Speaking to ESPN, he said:

“I love football, I love this team, I love this club. I still feel physically very well. I don’t have any problem with this age because I don’t feel it. I know I can help my teammates. I’m still hungry for more.”

His contract runs until June 2026, but Barcelona have not officially communicated their long-term plans. For a player of Lewandowski’s stature, the uncertainty is unusual — and a decision from the club may soon become unavoidable.

Conclusion: A Career at a Crossroads

The revelation about Barcelona’s request adds a dramatic twist to Lewandowski’s Catalan journey — one shaped by goals, financial strain, and quiet tension. As AC Milan circle and Barcelona assess their future, the legendary striker stands at a fascinating crossroads.

Whether he stays or moves on, one thing is clear: Robert Lewandowski’s hunger, professionalism, and scoring instincts remain as fierce as ever. And his next chapter — in Barcelona or elsewhere — promises to be just as compelling as the last.
