Aaron Ramsey is set for an emotional new challenge as he prepares to run the London Marathon, just weeks after announcing his retirement from football.
The former Arsenal and Wales captain is taking part to support a charity founded in memory of a young boy he knew personally.
Running For A Personal Cause
Ramsey is raising funds for It’s Never You, a charity set up by his friends Ceri and Frances Menai-Davis after the death of their six-year-old son Hugh from a rare cancer.
The 35-year-old shared a close bond with the family, with his own son having played alongside Hugh. Deeply moved by their loss, Ramsey said their strength and determination inspired him to take on the marathon challenge.
Emotional Tribute From Family
Hugh was diagnosed with a high-risk cancer in 2020 and passed away a year later. His parents have since worked tirelessly to support families facing similar situations.
During Sunday’s race, Hugh’s father will carry his son’s shoes and wear the names of hundreds of children affected by serious illness, turning the marathon into a powerful tribute.
Life After Football Begins
Ramsey recently ended a long and decorated playing career that included spells with clubs like Juventus, Rangers and Cardiff City.
While injuries affected his later years, he received widespread praise and heartfelt tributes following his retirement, highlighting his impact across the football world.
Coaching Ambitions Ahead
Looking forward, Ramsey has set his sights on a career in coaching. He has already gained experience with Cardiff City and has been involved with the Wales national setup under Craig Bellamy.
However, his immediate focus is on completing the marathon and supporting a cause that means far more than sport.
More Than Just A Race
For Ramsey, this is not just about crossing the finish line. It is about honouring a young life, supporting a grieving family, and using his platform to make a difference.
As he takes to the streets of London, the run will carry a deeper meaning—one rooted in memory, resilience and hope.
