Dhaka : The Indian senior men’s football team — the Blue Tigers — touched down in Dhaka, Bangladesh, three days ahead of their crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers Final Round showdown against the Bengal Tigers. Even though both teams are already eliminated from qualification contention, India’s goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu emphasized that the competitive fire remains undimmed.
“It won’t change the competitiveness or the fierceness of the game … we need to be prepared mentally and physically,” Sandhu said, recalling the intensity that always underpins clashes with Bangladeshi.
Rivalry Runs Deep — and the Stakes Feel Real
Veterans Speak Up
Defender Sandesh Jhingan, who captained India in their March meeting in Shillong, laid out a clear, no-frills plan:
“Play to our full potential, and stick to the system … If we can do that, the rest will follow.”
Experience Counts
Lallianzuala Chhangte, the nimble winger, is the only member of the current squad who’s played for India in Bangladesh — he scored for the Blue Tigers during the 2018 SAFF Championship in Dhaka.
Both Jhingan and Sandhu are familiar with the National Stadium in Dhaka, having played there before — Jhingan during U-23 qualifiers, and Sandhu in the U-23 South Asian Games.
The pair also have shared club history: back when they played for Bengaluru FC, they faced Abahani Limited Dhaka in the 2017 AFC Cup — a match that ended 0-2, but Bengaluru topped the group later.
A Tough Venue — and Warm Hospitality
Sandhu didn’t sugarcoat it:
“This place has always been a learning one … it’s very competitive. As our neighbours, the team here wants to give us a tough time.”
Despite the challenges, the Indian squad has felt welcomed. On arrival, they were given strong security support at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, with local police and the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) coordinating their safe transfer.
Jhingan expressed gratitude, saying that although they were briefed on local conditions, they haven’t felt unsafe. Sports, he added, “is something that unites people … I hope this game can also … bring a good feeling.”
Training, Focus & the Road Ahead
Coach Khalid Jamil’s squad hit the ground running: after an activation session on Sunday, they followed up with a full training session in the afternoon. A more formal session is planned at the National Stadium, Dhaka, before the match day.
The match kicks off at 19:30 IST on Tuesday and will be streamed live on FanCode.
What’s Driving the Blue Tigers
Pride & Rivalry: Even in a “dead rubber” situation, matches against Bangladesh carry emotional weight.
Learning Opportunity: Veterans like Jhingan and Sandhu value such games for their lessons, given their past experience in Dhaka.
Team Building: With qualification off the table, this feels like a moment to sharpen cohesion, test tactics, and gain momentum for future campaigns.
India’s trip to Dhaka is more than just another qualifier — it’s about legacy, rivalry, and leaving a mark, even when the odds are no longer in their favour. The Blue Tigers may not be playing for a place in the next round, but they’re certainly playing for pride.
