Victor Wembanyama delivered another historic performance to help the San Antonio Spurs extend their perfect start to the NBA season with a 118-107 win over the Brooklyn Nets in Texas.
A Record-Breaking Start
Wembanyama became the first player in NBA history to reach 100 points and 15 blocks in the first three games of a regular season. The French star finished with 31 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, three steals and six blocks in 36 minutes.
The 21-year-old, the number one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is now averaging 33.3 points, 13.3 rebounds and six blocks per game.
San Antonio raced into a 26-point lead at 81-55 with nine minutes left in the third quarter, before the Nets surged back with a 26-7 run to close the gap to 88-81. But a composed fourth-quarter stretch — including a 10-0 run — ensured the Spurs closed out the win.
Return From Long Injury Layoff
This season marks Wembanyama’s return after eight months out due to shoulder surgery for deep vein thrombosis in February. His explosive start has underlined why he was viewed as a once-in-a-generation talent even before entering the NBA.
Around the League
Elsewhere, Austin Reaves produced a career-high 51 points as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Sacramento Kings 127-120, stepping up in the absence of LeBron James.
Anthony Davis posted 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks beat the Toronto Raptors 139-129. Kawhi Leonard scored 30 and James Harden added 20 in the Los Angeles Clippers’ 114-107 win against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 40 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists were not enough for the Milwaukee Bucks, who fell 118-113 to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
