Real Madrid defeated Getafe 1-0 at the Estadio Coliseum on Sunday, reclaiming the top spot in La Liga. The win came just a week before their highly anticipated El Clasico against Barcelona. Despite dominating possession in the first half, Madrid struggled to break through Getafe’s organized defense. Franco Mastantuono was involved in the attack for Madrid, with Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo providing support.
Mbappe had an early chance when Federico Valverde played him through the middle, but defender Djene Dakonam blocked his shot. Rodrygo forced a fingertip save from goalkeeper David Soria with a curling effort from 20 yards in the 27th minute. Getafe’s five-man defense worked well to stifle Madrid’s attacking threats, with Soria making several saves to keep the match scoreless.
Despite registering seven shots on target compared to Getafe’s none in the first 70 minutes, Madrid struggled to turn territorial dominance into clear-cut scoring opportunities. Manager Xabi Alonso brought on Vinicius Junior for Franco Mastantuono in the second half, changing the flow of the game and drawing fouls from Getafe defenders. This led to Allan Nyom being sent off for a straight red card after just one minute on the pitch.
Mbappe scored seconds after Nyom’s dismissal in the 78th minute, netting his 50th goal of 2025 for club and country. The goal proved to be the match-winner for Real Madrid. It was a major milestone for the French forward, who had last reached the 50-goal mark in 2023 while playing for Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Getafe made one last-ditch attempt to equalize in stoppage time. However, Thibaut Courtois was on hand to deny Englishman Abu Kamara with his knee. Real Madrid controlled possession for extended periods and attempted several crosses and through balls but found little space against Getafe’s compact defensive shape.
