Bhubaneswar: In a thrilling encounter at the Gelora Bung Karno Madya Stadium in Jakarta, India U23 secured a 2-1 victory against hosts Indonesia in the first of two international friendlies. The match, held on October 10, 2025, saw Suhail Ahmad Bhat’s clinical brace in the first half prove decisive for the Blue Colts.
Early Breakthroughs and Bhat’s Brilliance
The game commenced with high intensity, and India took the lead in the 5th minute. Bhat capitalized on a loose pass from Indonesia’s Frengky Missa, intercepting the ball and unleashing a powerful right-footed shot into the top corner of the net. This early goal set the tone for India’s assertive performance.
Indonesia responded with urgency, creating several opportunities to equalize. However, India’s defense, led by debutant goalkeeper Mohanraj K, remained resolute. In the 26th minute, India extended their lead. Vibin Mohanan delivered a precise low cross from the left, which captain Ayush Chhetri deftly laid off to Bhat. Bhat, showing strength and composure, fired another powerful strike into the top corner, securing his second goal of the match.
Despite India’s dominance, Indonesia managed to pull one back in the 41st minute. Left-back Dony Tri Pamungkas found space on the edge of the box and curled a shot into the top corner, leaving Mohanraj K with no chance. This goal reduced India’s lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.
Second Half: Defensive Solidity
The second half saw both teams battle for control, but clear-cut chances were limited. India’s defense, with the introduction of substitute goalkeeper Dipesh Chauhan, who made his U23 debut, stood firm against Indonesia’s attacks. In the 57th minute, Bhat had a header from a Meetei Haobam cross, but it was comfortably saved by Indonesia’s goalkeeper Cahya Supriadi.
As the match progressed, Indonesia increased their pressure, but India’s disciplined defensive unit thwarted every attempt. Chauhan, though not heavily tested, remained alert and ensured the 2-1 scoreline was maintained until the final whistle.
Post-Match Reactions
Bhat’s exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Match award. In his post-match interview, he expressed his dedication to the team’s collective effort:
> “We all came here intending to win. We had a good run in the AFC (U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers), but unfortunately, we couldn’t qualify. Still, the hunger is there. We want to win more; this is just the beginning. I dedicate my goals to my teammates. They worked hard until the 90th minute. Of course, scoring feels good, but it’s all for the team.”
Head coach Naushad Moosa commended the team’s performance, acknowledging the challenges posed by Indonesia:
> “It was a difficult game, but I really appreciate the boys. Everyone was supporting each other throughout. There are still many things to learn. But yeah, I did say before that it wouldn’t be easy for Indonesia.”

With the victory, India U23 will look to build on this momentum in the second friendly match against Indonesia, scheduled for October 13, 2025, at the same venue. The team’s performance, especially Bhat’s clinical finishing, has provided a strong foundation for the upcoming fixtures.
