Bhubaneswar: In a candid conversation, former Indian cricketer and current coach Gautam Gambhir revealed the biggest setback of his coaching career, describing a moment that still lingers vividly in his memory. Reflecting on the challenges he faced, Gambhir did not hold back, stating, “I can never forget that in my coaching career.”
Gambhir, known for his aggressive and results-driven approach, pinpointed India’s 3-0 home Test series loss to New Zealand in 2024 as a defining low point. This series marked India’s first home Test series defeat in 12 years, a shocking outcome for a team that had maintained an impeccable home record. He emphasized the importance of remembering such setbacks, both for personal growth and to instill a sense of focus and resilience in the team.
The coach also highlighted the lessons derived from such experiences. By confronting failure head-on, Gambhir believes teams can develop stronger mental fortitude and avoid complacency. He reinforced that recalling these moments is not just about regret but about learning and growing. “I’ve told this to the boys as well,” he mentioned, emphasizing the importance of sharing these experiences with his players to keep them grounded and motivated.
Despite the setback, Gambhir continues to lead the team with a philosophy of discipline and accountability. His coaching style emphasizes a “Spartan mentality,” pushing players to strive for excellence and reject mediocrity. This approach, according to Gambhir, ensures that the team remains competitive at the highest level and continues to chase success, learning from past disappointments.
