The Freak Accident
Maxwell was injured on Tuesday while participating in a net session at Mount Maunganui. He fractured his arm after being struck by a shot from big-hitting batsman Mitchell Owen. The force of Owen’s drive, which hit Maxwell on the arm (near the wrist), immediately ruled him out of the series.
Teammate Matthew Short, who was practicing in an adjoining net, witnessed the incident. Cricket Australia confirmed the injury and stated that Maxwell would return home for a specialist review to determine his recovery timeline.
Replacement and Squad Setbacks
Maxwell’s departure is the second significant injury blow for the Australian squad ahead of the trans-Tasman series.
- Maxwell’s Replacement: Wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Philippe has been called into the squad as an immediate replacement for Maxwell.
- Prior Injury: Earlier this month, Australia lost wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis due to a right calf strain. Inglis was subsequently replaced by Alex Carey.
A Career Plagued by Bizarre Injuries
The fractured arm adds to Maxwell’s reputation for sustaining highly unusual injuries throughout his career:
- Broken Leg (Three Years Ago): He fractured his leg when a friend fell on it during a $\text{50}$th birthday party.
- Concussion (
World Cup): He was concussed after falling off a golf cart during the
World Cup.
Series Outlook
New Zealand is scheduled to host Australia for three T20 Internationals, all to be played in Mount Maunganui, on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Maxwell is now considered a doubt for Australia’s five-match home T20 series against India that is set to take place in a month’s time.
