American Gambits Regret Missing Erigaisi, Eye New Plans for GCL 2025

PC- Times of India

American Gambits head coach Srinath Narayanan admitted the franchise was keen to rope in Indian star Arjun Erigaisi for the upcoming Global Chess League (GCL), but after losing out in the bidding race, the team will now adjust its strategy ahead of the December tournament.

Erigaisi slips away

Narayanan revealed that the team had pushed their bidding points well beyond the original cap in an attempt to secure Erigaisi, who was eventually picked up by PBG Alaskan Knights.
“I have a personal connection with Arjun. Hikaru (Nakamura) rates him very highly, and we felt he would have been a perfect fit alongside him. I even went beyond the 250-point cap we set for ourselves, crossing 300 points, but with PBG holding 1,000 compared to our 800, it wasn’t possible,” he explained.

Squad balance takes priority

Despite missing their “top preference,” American Gambits believe they have built a strong unit around retained icons Hikaru Nakamura and Bibisara Assaubayeva. They have added Richard Rapport, Vladislav Artemiev, Teodora Injac, and young Russian prodigy Volodar Murzin.
Narayanan said Murzin could be the game-changer: “He is already competing at a 2650 level, showing maturity and reliability. He’s arguably the strongest junior in the world right now.”

Eye on consistency

Co-owner PP Prachura echoed confidence in Murzin, noting his recent World Open Rapid triumph. “We expect him to deliver critical wins for us. The prodigy board can tilt matches, and we believe we’ve secured the best option there,” he said.
The Gambits are also banking on stability: “We want our players to grow with the team rather than reshuffle every season. With backing from Ravichandran Ashwin and Nakamura, our brand is here to stay.”

GCL returns to India

The third edition of the Global Chess League will run in Mumbai from December 13 to 24, marking its first staging in India after previous events in the UAE and London. Six franchises will compete, including American Gambits, Ganges Grandmasters, Triveni Continental Kings, Alpine SG Pipers, UpGrad Mumba Masters, and PBG Alaskan Knights.
