Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas was elected as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday. He takes over from Roger Binny, who stepped down last month after crossing the age limit of 70.
From the field to the boardroom
At 45, Manhas becomes the 37th president of the Board. A prolific domestic all-rounder, he represented Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir in 157 First-Class matches, scoring over 9,700 runs with 27 centuries. He also played 130 List A and 55 IPL matches during a career that spanned nearly two decades.
Key appointments at AGM
The AGM also confirmed a reshuffle of administrative posts. Devajit Saikia retained his role as secretary, while Arun Dhumal continued as IPL Governing Council chairman. Former India cricketer Raghuram Bhat was elected treasurer, with Prabhtej Bhatia moving into the joint secretary’s position. Jaydev Shah, president of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, joined the Apex Council.
Women’s panel gets new leadership
Former India pacer Amita Sharma was named chairperson of the women’s selection committee, succeeding Neetu David. Sharma, who represented India in 116 ODIs, will work alongside Shyama Dey, Jaya Sharma and Sravanthi Naidu. Their tenure will begin after the upcoming Women’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Men’s and junior committees
The men’s selection panel saw the inclusion of former internationals RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha, while S Sharath returned to the junior selection committee.
Harbhajan welcomes move
Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh hailed the decision to appoint Manhas, calling it “a positive step” to have a cricketer lead the Board. He said Manhas’ experience would help strengthen cricket infrastructure across the country and hoped he would ensure no young player was left behind due to lack of facilities.
