Madrid: Vinícius Júnior has praised Lamine Yamal for speaking out against anti-Muslim chants, stressing the need for footballers to unite in the fight against discrimination. The Real Madrid forward said players with a strong voice must take responsibility to highlight issues affecting minorities and vulnerable communities.
Vinícius’ comments came after the young Barcelona star publicly condemned abusive chants directed at him during Spain’s friendly against Egypt. Yamal, who is Muslim, described the chants as disrespectful and intolerable — a stance Vinícius believes can inspire others to speak up.
“It’s important that Lamine speaks about it. It could help others,” Vinícius said, noting that while elite footballers have platforms and resources, ordinary people facing discrimination often struggle without support.
The Brazilian international, who has himself endured racist abuse in Europe, emphasised the importance of solidarity among players to push for lasting change.
The 25-year-old winger also reflected on recent incidents, including allegations of abuse during a Champions League tie in Lisbon. He reiterated that racism exists across many countries but insisted collective action could prevent future generations from facing similar experiences.
Beyond social issues, Vinícius addressed his future at Madrid ahead of the club’s Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munich. His current deal runs until June 2027, and the forward expressed his desire to remain at the Santiago Bernabéu for many years.
“I’m calm. At the right time we’ll do the renewal,” he said, adding that he enjoys the confidence of club president Florentino Pérez and considers Madrid “the club of my dreams.”
Vinícius has recently returned to top form, scoring four goals in two games before the international break, following a difficult period earlier in the season under former coach Xabi Alonso. He now says he shares a “fantastic connection” with current boss Álvaro Arbeloa.
Despite earlier criticism and reduced playing time, Vinícius said the challenging phase helped him mature. “It was a moment for learning… every day there’s a new experience where I can improve,” he added.
A decisive performer in recent Champions League triumphs, Vinícius remains central to Madrid’s ambitions — both on the pitch and in the ongoing fight against discrimination in football.
