Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo produced a dramatic final-round effort to reclaim the men’s triple jump world title at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo. The Olympic champion soared to 17.91m on his last attempt, denying Italy’s Andrea Dallavalle a famous upset.
Drama in the final round
Pichardo led most of the competition with 17.55m before Dallavalle stunned the field with a personal-best 17.64m on his last jump. With the pressure on, the 31-year-old called on the Tokyo crowd and responded in style, sealing gold with his season’s best.
A champion’s resilience
The victory marked a remarkable comeback for Pichardo, who missed the 2023 Worlds due to injury. Returning to the stadium where he won Olympic gold in 2021, the Portuguese star added another world crown to his 2022 triumph in Oregon. He dedicated the win to his father, crediting him for keeping him motivated through tough times.
Podium places decided
Dallavalle’s late heroics secured silver, his first global medal, while Cuba’s Lazaro Martinez claimed bronze with 17.49m. Algeria’s Yasser Triki once again narrowly missed out, finishing fourth at 17.25m.
Farewell to Zango
The final also marked the retirement of Burkina Faso’s Hugues Fabrice Zango. The 2023 world outdoor champion and 2024 world indoor champion ended seventh with 16.92m but leaves behind a historic legacy as Africa’s first jumper beyond 18.00m.
