CARDIFF, WALES — South Africa clinched a chaotic, rain-affected 14-run victory (DLS method) over England in the first of three T20 Internationals at Cardiff on Wednesday night. The match, which saw significant delays and two revised targets, was a farcical start to the series, with South Africa’s quick-fire batting proving decisive.
South Africa’s Quickfire Innings
After a rain delay that lasted nearly two hours, South Africa’s innings was initially reduced to nine overs. Quick-fire knocks from captain Aiden Markram (28 from 14 balls), Dewald Brevis (23 from 10 balls), and Donovan Ferreira (25 not out from 11 balls) powered the Proteas to a strong total. Each of the three batsmen hit multiple sixes, capitalizing on the limited overs. England’s left-arm seamer Luke Wood (2-22) and leg-spinner Adil Rashid (1-24) were the pick of the bowlers, but they couldn’t prevent South Africa from reaching a total of 97-5 before rain again stopped play after just 7.5 overs.
England’s Revised Target Proves Too Much
Following the second rain interruption, England were set a revised DLS target of 69 runs to win from just five overs. Despite a blistering start from former captain Jos Buttler, who smashed 25 from 11 balls, the rest of the English batting order crumbled. South African bowlers Marco Jansen (2-18) and Corbin Bosch (2-20) delivered a masterclass in death bowling, taking two wickets each and restricting England to 54-5, ultimately securing the win for their team.
The second match of the series is scheduled to take place on Friday at Old Trafford in Manchester, with the final contest at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Sunday.
