Indian Super League action returned to the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday night, and Mohun Bagan Super Giant made full use of home comfort, defeating Chennaiyin FC 2-0 in the 2025-26 season.
After a cagey first half in which chances were few and far between, the Mariners raised the tempo immediately after the interval. The breakthrough arrived in the 48th minute when Jamie Maclaren found space inside the box and calmly slotted home to put the hosts ahead. The goal shifted the momentum decisively in Mohun Bagan’s favour.
Chennaiyin attempted to respond but struggled to carve out clear openings against a disciplined Mohun Bagan backline. The home side continued to press, and their attacking persistence paid off again in the 65th minute. Dimitri Petratos produced a clinical finish to double the advantage, effectively putting the contest beyond the visitors’ reach.
With greater control in midfield and sharper movement in the final third, Mohun Bagan dictated the rhythm for most of the second half. Chennaiyin, despite flashes of intent, could not find the cutting edge required to mount a comeback.
The victory strengthens Mohun Bagan’s position in the early phase of the ISL 2025-26 campaign, while Chennaiyin will need to regroup quickly as the league gathers momentum.
A composed second-half display, capped by goals from Maclaren and Petratos, ensured the Mariners sailed smoothly to three valuable points in Kolkata.
