Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente has thrown his full support behind Lamine Yamal in the race for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, calling the Barcelona teenager “the best player in the world” while reminding fans he is still just 17.
Speaking after Spain’s recent Nations League triumph, de la Fuente praised Yamal’s maturity beyond his years:
“When I talk to him privately, of course, he’s still a kid, but I’m amazed at the reflections he makes. I’m glad he is that way.”
Yamal’s case for the prestigious award was strengthened by a stunning performance in Spain’s dramatic 5–4 victory over France in the Nations League semi-final, where he scored twice and showcased his remarkable skill and composure on the big stage.
The Barcelona academy graduate has enjoyed a breakout year, dazzling both in La Liga and on the international stage. His creativity and football intelligence have drawn praise from fellow professionals, with former Barça star Gerard Deulofeu recently labeling him the “greatest football creator” of his generation and a leading Ballon d’Or contender.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony, scheduled for September 22, 2025, will see Yamal compete with seasoned stars including Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé, who is also tipped as a favorite after a title-packed campaign.
While the teenager’s potential has long been clear, de la Fuente’s comments underline his remarkable rise to global stardom:
“He deserves to win the Ballon d’Or,” said the Spain boss, adding that Yamal’s development is proof of both his natural talent and maturity.
As anticipation builds for the awards, Yamal’s mix of youthful energy, composure, and brilliance has made him one of football’s most compelling talents—and a genuine favorite to claim football’s highest individual honor.
