Manchester United‘s path under Ruben Amorim is looking directionless. This has taken centerstage after Manchester United were stunned by League Two side Grimsby Town in the 2nd round clash of the Carabao Cup at Blundell Lane. The Red Devils lost 12-11 on penalties after the match ended 2-2 in normal time.
Manchester United are winless in their three opening matches of the 2025/26 season. After losing their Premier League opener to Arsenal and then drawing against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Matchday 2, they were backed to see off Grimsby Town, but instead the hosts were superior.
Amorim’s men made their opponents look like a Premier League top half side. They were edgy, nervous and played to their opponent’s strengths. Two errors from their goalkeeper Andre Onana which ended up being goals didn’t give a sound reading. Grimsby were 2-0 up by half-time and although Manchester United fought back to make it 2-2, they were once again subdued in the shootout.
After the match, a crestfallen Amorim said, “I am shocked because we are in the moment when we make a lot of changes, ” Amorim said on ITV. “We try to fight a lot of things but then when we have these moments, we need to show up. If we don’t show up, you can feel that something has to change and you are not going to change 22 players again.”
Although, Amorim has the backing of the Manchester United hierarchy for now, things could change if results don’t improve. The Portuguese took over in November last year and saw his side finish 15th in the Premier League. The club also lost in the Europa League final to miss out on Europe this season.
With the season just starting, Man United are already out of one competition. Their only hope for silverware is the FA Cup. This weekend, Man United host Burnley in the Premier League. Failing to win the match will be catastrophic for Amorim and what he is set out to do. The fixation on a 3-4-2-1 formation has already made fans impatient as results are hard to come by.
Here we present the abysmal stats of Amorim as Manchester United head coach.
- As per Opta, the defeat to Grimsby Town marked the first time in the club’s history that the Red Devils have been eliminated from a cup competition by a team in the fourth tier.
- Amorim owns a 35.56% win rate in all competitions. This is the lowest by a Manchester United manager in the Premier League era.
- United have only won seven of their 29 Premier League games under Amorim.
- Amorim has won only 7 Premier League matches (L15 D7). In these 29 games, he has won 28 points.
- Overall, he has 16 wins, 12 draws, and 17 defeats from 45 matches as Man United manager.
