Senior India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has moved to clear the air over his recent remarks on Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) signing of South African youngster Dewald Brevis, insisting that his words were taken out of context.
Controversy after Ashwin’s remarks
The episode began when Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, appeared to suggest that CSK had paid “extra” to acquire Brevis, who was roped in as an injury replacement for pacer Gurjapneet Singh during the IPL 2025 season.
CSK, who signed Brevis for the same ₹2.20 crore contract value that Gurjapneet held, later issued an official statement stressing that all rules and procedures were followed in the signing.
Ashwin clarifies his stand
In a fresh statement on his channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin said his comments were misinterpreted.
“My intent in the old video was to talk about Brevis’ batting, not about his IPL signing amount. Every player who plays in the IPL has a binding contract with both the franchise and the tournament. If there is anything wrong in the process, that player simply won’t be ratified,” Ashwin said.
He added that in today’s digital age, single lines or headlines could often be twisted, sparking unnecessary controversy.
Praise for Brevis
Ashwin also took the opportunity to hail the 22-year-old South African, who has been in scintillating form, scoring a maiden T20I century against Australia and following it up with a half-century in the same series.
“The way Brevis is batting, CSK has struck gold. He is in the purple patch of his career. Power-striker, monstrous hitter against spin—he is a very special talent,” Ashwin said.
Why CSK issued a clarification
Ashwin further explained that CSK’s statement was needed to clear misconceptions.
“In today’s time, there is a need to clarify the right things as well. No mistake was made by the franchise, the player or the governing body. The clarification only came because a lot of people had doubts,” he said.
He added that injury replacements are routine in the IPL, and the process involves both the franchise and the BCCI’s approval.
