World champion Lando Norris believes the 2026 Formula 1 season could deliver unpredictable and dramatic races due to sweeping new regulations. With major changes to engines, aerodynamics and energy systems, the McLaren driver says the emphasis will now be firmly on drivers’ skill and decision-making under pressure.
New Regulations Bring Fresh Challenges
Formula 1 has introduced its biggest technical overhaul in history, affecting power units, chassis, fuel and tyres. The updated hybrid engines now rely more heavily on electrical energy, forcing drivers to carefully manage battery usage throughout each lap and race.
Energy Management Key To Performance
Norris says controlling battery levels will be central to success this season. The new ‘boost button’ provides short bursts of power but drains energy quickly, making timing crucial. Poor management could lead to sudden drops in speed, increasing the chances of overtakes and position changes.
More Overtaking And Race ‘Yo-Yoing’
According to Norris, drivers may swap places more frequently as they balance attacking with saving energy. Some will gain speed using electrical power, only to fall back later while recharging, creating what he describes as “more chaos” and more exciting racing.
Cars Faster But Harder To Handle
Although the engines remain 1.6-litre V6 hybrids, changes to electrical systems mean drivers lose significant power if batteries are depleted. Combined with lighter cars, reduced downforce and active aerodynamics, this makes throttle control and timing more important than ever.
Battery Recovery A Major Focus
Recovering energy efficiently is now a major technical challenge. Drivers must manage gears, revs and braking carefully to recharge batteries during races and qualifying. Norris admitted mastering this system is one of the biggest learning curves under the new rules.
Active Aerodynamics Change Racing Style
The introduction of adjustable front and rear wings allows cars to reduce drag on straights and recover energy more effectively. While this boosts speed, it also changes cornering behaviour, forcing drivers to adapt their racing lines and braking points.
Reduced Downforce Increases Difficulty
With less aerodynamic grip, several corners that were previously flat-out now require braking. Norris believes this will reward skilled drivers and open up more strategic possibilities, especially when using fresh tyres.
Piastri Sees Positive Early Signs
Team-mate Oscar Piastri feels the new cars are less difficult than expected. He insists Formula 1 has retained its identity and says most early concerns have been eased after pre-season testing.
Norris Hungry For More Success
After winning his first world title in 2025, Norris says his motivation remains strong. He is determined to improve further and believes confidence from last season will help him compete at the highest level again.
With major technical changes reshaping the sport, Norris expects adaptability and precision to define the 2026 season. If his predictions are correct, fans can expect tighter battles, frequent position changes and one of the most unpredictable Formula 1 campaigns in recent history.
