Fan Escapes Serious Injury After Trying to Catch Dewald Brevis’ Massive Six at Cairns T20I

Australia : During the thrilling third T20 International between Australia and South Africa at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns on August 16, 2025, an unforgettable moment unfolded not just on the pitch, but in the stands. South African batting sensation Dewald Brevis smashed a towering six that sent a fan into a desperate bid to catch the airborne ball. In the excitement, the fan collided violently with a fence near the boundary, creating a chaotic yet fortunate scene of a near-miss injury.

The incident occurred in the 10th over of South Africa’s innings as Brevis unleashed a series of devastating shots against Australian bowler Aaron Hardie. Among those was a sequence of four consecutive sixes, including no-look hits that electrified the crowd. One of these gargantuan sixes soared so high and deep into the stands that the fan sprinted toward the boundary in an attempt to claim the ball. In his rush, the fan misjudged the distance and crashed heavily into the metal fence, falling to the ground abruptly. Thankfully, after a brief moment of concern, he was able to stand up quickly, unharmed and waving to the crowd. The video of the mishap quickly went viral, highlighting the high stakes of both the game and the passion of its fans.

Meanwhile, Dewald Brevis’ fireworks on the field continued as he blazed through 53 runs off just 26 balls, smashing six sixes and a four, making a spectacular contribution to South Africa’s total of 172/7. His fearless batting brought the spectators to their feet again and again though he was eventually caught out in the 12th over by Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, who held a stunning diving catch at long-on. Brevis’ innings, including that memorable massive six, was a highlight of the series and a testament to his growing stature in international cricket.

This unforgettable scene in Cairns, where a fan’s eagerness to catch a six led to a dramatic collision with the fence but no lasting injury, perfectly encapsulated the intensity and excitement of T20 cricket. It was a day where the boundary line was tested not only by immense hitting excitement but also by the enthusiastic spirit of the crowd, who showed just how much they live and breathe the game. The match ended with Australia narrowly clinching the series 2-1, but the memories of Brevis’ fearless six-hitting and that dramatic fan incident will be talked about for a long time to come.
