Bhubaneswar : The Hockey India League faces a dramatic twist as top European nations—Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and England—have refused to release their star players for the new season, citing a packed 2026 schedule dominated by the World Cup. This move could see nearly half the international talent missing, leaving franchises scrambling and young Indian hopefuls without global mentors.
The talent drain comes after last season’s foreign exodus, when 29 international players pulled out due to low pay and inconvenient venues. Now, with European federations prioritizing home leagues and major tournaments, the HIL risks losing its competitive sparkle. Franchise officials are lobbying Hockey India and the International Hockey Federation to negotiate a solution before the September mini-auction.
Despite the setback, organizers are switching gears by shortening the league and spreading matches across Chennai, Ranchi, and Bhubaneswar. The withdrawal of two prominent teams further fuels uncertainty, but league bosses promise the show will go on. Franchise leaders stress: “Foreign stars add vital value—not just skill, but inspiration. The league will happen, but we must not let Indian hockey’s growth get overshadowed.”
With European legends out, the spotlight is firmly on India’s rising talent to deliver the thrills and keep the hockey spirit blazing.
