Liverpool, UK – Premier League champions Liverpool have further bolstered their defensive ranks with the acquisition of 18-year-old Italian centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma. The Merseyside club officially announced the signing on Friday, with the highly-rated Italy Under-19 international penning a long-term contract.
Key Details of the Transfer
While financial specifics were not officially disclosed by the club, British media outlets reported the transfer fee to be around £26 million, plus potential add-ons. Leoni has committed his future to Anfield with a six-year contract, a clear indication of Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s long-term vision for the promising defender.
Leoni’s arrival marks the latest significant addition to Arne Slot’s squad, as Liverpool continues a major spending spree in the close season. With previous notable signings including Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez, the club’s total expenditure for the summer has now surged to over £300 million.
Leoni’s Career Trajectory and Role at Anfield
Standing at an imposing six-foot, four-inches (1.95m), Leoni began his senior career at Italian second-tier club Padova in 2023, making his professional debut at just 16 years old. He then moved to Sampdoria in January 2024 before joining Parma in August last year. During his sole campaign with Parma, he made 17 appearances in Serie A, helping them to a 16th-place finish. He is widely regarded as one of Europe’s top young centre-back talents.
The young centre-back is expected to integrate directly into the first-team squad, bypassing any loan moves. His immediate inclusion will provide crucial depth and quality to Liverpool’s backline, joining established defenders such as captain Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez. This defensive reinforcement comes as Liverpool prepares for the new season, looking to address some frailties observed during their pre-season matches.
