NEOM, Saudi Arabia – Saudi top-flight club Neom announced on Friday the acquisition of former Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure on a free transfer. The 32-year-old Malian international joins Neom as they prepare to make their debut in the Saudi Pro League this upcoming season.
A New Chapter After Everton Spell
Doucoure’s move to the ambitious Saudi club comes after his contract with Premier League side Everton expired in June, concluding a five-year spell at Goodison Park. During his time with Everton, the energetic midfielder made a significant impact, featuring in 166 appearances across all competitions and scoring 21 goals. His powerful runs from midfield and crucial goals often played a vital role, particularly in recent seasons as Everton battled against relegation.
Expressing his excitement for this new chapter, Doucoure shared a message on Neom’s X (formerly Twitter) account: “Football was not just a game, it was my dream, my heartbeat, my whole life. And today, it’s time for my new journey with Neom. The story isn’t over, this is just the beginning.”
Neom’s Ambitious Summer Signings
Neom has been actively strengthening their squad in the close season, making several high-profile signings as they prepare for their inaugural Saudi Pro League campaign. Doucoure joins a list of notable arrivals that includes French striker Alexandre Lacazette, Polish goalkeeper Marcin Bulka, and Ivorian midfielder Amadou Kone. These acquisitions signal Neom’s clear intent to establish themselves as a competitive force in the Saudi top flight.
Neom is set to kick off their historic Saudi Pro League campaign on August 28, with a challenging opening fixture against Al-Ahli.
