New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has responded to growing speculation about the One-Day International (ODI) futures of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, stating that no immediate retirement calls are on the table.
Board Opts For Patience Over Premature Announcements
Amid mounting chatter over whether the star duo will continue beyond the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, the BCCI has stressed that decisions will be guided by performance, fitness, and upcoming team requirements. Officials made it clear that neither player has conveyed plans to step away from the ODI format at this stage.
Focus Shifts To Upcoming Series And Tournaments
India’s next ODI engagement is set against Australia in October, a key preparation phase leading into the Asia Cup 2025 and the T20 World Cup early next year. The BCCI reiterated that both Sharma and Kohli remain central to the team’s plans in the short term, while also leaving room for future evaluations.
No Farewell Match Plans In Place
Refuting rumors about a special farewell fixture for the pair in Sydney, the board confirmed that no such discussions have been held. “If they have something in mind, they will communicate it,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying.
With a combined ODI record of over 25,000 runs and 83 centuries, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s experience remains invaluable to Indian cricket. The BCCI’s statement signals a desire to balance respect for the veterans’ contributions with the team’s evolving needs.
