Hamburg : India’s squash campaign at the PSA Bronze-level Hamburg Open got a strong start with convincing victories from Joshna Chinappa and Veer Chotrani, while compatriots Velavan Senthilkumar and Tanvi Khanna exited in the opening round.

Former women’s world No. 10 Joshna Chinappa set the tone for India’s success with a comprehensive win over Germany’s Saskia Beinhard, prevailing 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 to advance to the next round. The Chennai-born veteran, known for her longevity and major titles on tour, controlled rallies with precision and experience against her local opponent.

On the men’s side, world No. 47 Veer Chotrani backed up that performance by defeating Spain’s Ivan Perez in straight games — 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 — demonstrating his growing consistency on the PSA circuit. Chotrani, a product of India’s rising squash talent pool, showed tactical maturity to close out each game under pressure.

Two other Indians in the field were unable to replicate that success. Velavan Senthilkumar fell in straight games to Japan’s R. Tsukue 11-4, 11-9, 14-12, while Tanvi Khanna was edged out by Ireland’s Hannah Craig 11-5, 11-7, 13-11, ending their campaigns on day one.

Top seeds Abhay Singh (men’s No. 5) and Ramit Tandon (No. 7) benefited from first-round byes and will begin their Hamburg Open runs in the second round.

Chinappa and Chotrani’s wins mark an encouraging start for the Indian contingent as the tournament progresses.
