This minimal-invasive technique of surgery using a camera takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour, listen to its advantages from the reputed Indian shoulder surgeon

A rotator cuff tear is one of the most debilitating shoulder injuries, especially for athletes who rely heavily on overhead motion. Whether it’s a powerful dunk in basketball or an intense serve in tennis, this injury can instantly halt a career in its tracks. But with the advent of minimally invasive laparoscopic/arthroscopic surgery, recovery outcomes have significantly improved—allowing athletes to reclaim their form.

Know the injury: The rotator cuff is a group of four tendons and muscles that surround the shoulder joint, stabilizing it and allowing for a wide range of motion. When torn, either partially or completely, individuals often experience weakness, limited mobility, and severe pain—especially while lifting the arm or sleeping on the affected side.

How is it caused? Rotator cuff tears can occur due to acute trauma—such as falling on an outstretched arm—or from chronic overuse, particularly in athletes. One high-profile example is NBA legend Kobe Bryant, who tore his right rotator cuff in 2015 during a game. The injury, caused during a routine dunk, ended his season and required surgical intervention.

Edge over open surgery: Laparoscopic surgery, also known as arthroscopic shoulder surgery, has emerged as the go-to method for repairing such injuries. Unlike open surgery, this technique involves inserting a small camera (arthroscope) and specialized instruments through tiny incisions. Surgeons then visualize the damage on a monitor and perform precise repairs without the need for large cuts.

Post-surgery regime: Post-surgery, patients typically undergo a structured physical therapy regimen that spans for some months, depending upon the patient’s condition. The first few weeks involve immobilization of the shoulder, followed by gradual strengthening and range-of-motion exercises.

Success story of Kobe Bryant: After his rotator cuff surgery, Kobe Bryant embarked on a rigorous rehabilitation program and returned to play in the 2015–16 NBA season, where he completed his celebrated farewell tour. His comeback stands as a testament to how modern surgical methods, coupled with discipline and physiotherapy, can help athletes rebound from once career-threatening injuries.

What’s the key to repair? For everyday individuals and elite athletes alike, early diagnosis, proper medical intervention, and committed rehabilitation remain the keys to recovery from a rotator cuff tear.
