Bhubaneshwar, Odisha – India’s badminton star Kidambi Srikanth, currently ranked 49th globally, has once again showcased his prowess, advancing to the men’s singles semifinals at the Canada Open Super 300 badminton tournament. The former world championships silver medallist defeated top seed Chou Tien-Chen of Chinese Taipei in a decisive straight-game victory on Friday night at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Markham, Ontario, Canada.
Srikanth Dominates Top Seed Chou Tien-Chen
In a 43-minute quarterfinal clash, Srikanth outclassed the world No. 6 Chou Tien-Chen with a score of 21-18, 21-9. This victory marks a continuation of Srikanth’s strong form, following his appearance in the Malaysia Masters final earlier this May.
Key Moments from the Match:
- Strong Start: Srikanth initiated the first game with a dominant 5-0 lead, setting the tone for the match.
- Holding His Ground: Despite Chou Tien-Chen briefly drawing level at 16-16 and taking a 17-16 lead, Srikanth held his nerve, reeling off five of the next six points to secure the first game 21-18.
- Second Game Surge: In the second game, Srikanth broke away from a 4-4 tie, establishing a significant 11-6 lead at the interval. He maintained this momentum, surging to 19-7 before comfortably closing out the match 21-9.
Path to the Semifinals and Head-to-Head Records
The 32-year-old from Guntur now boasts a 5-6 record against Chou, having won their last three encounters. Srikanth, who enjoyed a breakthrough 2017 season with four titles, will next face Japan’s third seed Kenta Nishimoto in the semifinals. He holds a favorable 6-4 head-to-head record against Nishimoto, though their last meeting at the 2023 World Championships saw the Japanese shuttler emerge victorious.
Other Indian Campaigners
While Srikanth continues his impressive run, other Indian players faced exits in their respective categories. S. Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, the 2022 World Junior Championships silver medallist, put up a valiant effort against Kenta Nishimoto but ultimately lost 15-21, 21-5, 17-21 in a grueling 79-minute quarterfinal. In women’s singles, Shriyanshi Valishetty’s journey concluded after a defeat to Denmark’s Amalie Schulz.
Srikanth remains the sole Indian competitor vying for the title at the USD 240,000 tournament.
